A whole-house humidifier ties into your furnace ductwork rather than sitting in a room like a portable unit. The first decision is bypass versus steam. A bypass or fan-powered humidifier draws warm air from the supply duct, runs it across a water panel, and returns the humidified air to the return side; it is the more common choice and works well for most Ottawa homes. A steam humidifier boils water and injects vapour directly into the supply duct, which adds humidity faster and more precisely but costs more and needs more maintenance. Either way, we tap into the supply and return plenums, run a water line from a nearby cold supply, install a drain for the water panel or steam canister, and mount a humidistat, usually on a return duct or a wall away from direct airflow so it reads the house accurately rather than the duct.

Most installs take three to five hours when the furnace and ductwork are easily accessible and there is a cold water line nearby.
