The Canada Greener Homes Grant and the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus are both finished. Neither is taking new applicants. The program running in Ontario now is Home Renovation Savings, delivered by Enbridge Gas with Save on Energy and backed by the Ontario government. Pre approval is mandatory, which is the part people get caught by: if the equipment is already installed when you apply, the rebate is gone.
Here is what that program is worth on a heat pump, and what you have to do to get it.
What You Can Get on a Heat Pump
How much you get depends on what heats your house today, not on what you are replacing it with.

Most Ottawa homes on natural gas fall in the first column. If your house runs on baseboard electric, oil or propane, you are in the second one, and the numbers are considerably better.
How It Works
- Check your eligibility and register at homerenovationsavings.ca. Do this before you book anything.
- Get pre approval. The program’s own wording is blunt about this: installations done before approval are not eligible.
- Have the work done by a contractor registered with the program.
- Submit the paperwork. The rebate is issued after the installation is verified.
To qualify you need to be an Enbridge Gas customer with an active account whose home is heated primarily by a natural gas furnace or boiler, or your home has to be connected to the Ontario electricity grid.
Other Upgrades That Qualify

- Smart thermostat: $100.
- Heat pump water heater: $500. This one sits on the stream that requires a home energy assessment first.
- Home energy assessment itself: $600 back.
- Windows and doors: $100 per rough opening, assessment required.
- Attic and wall insulation and air sealing, at amounts that depend on your starting insulation level.
That is worth knowing before you plan a budget around furnace replacement or air conditioner work. There is no rebate listed for a standard gas furnace, a central air conditioner, or a conventional gas tank or tankless water heater. If someone tells you otherwise, ask them to show you where it says that on the program site.
What Has Closed
- Canada Greener Homes Grant. Closed. 31 December 2025 was the final day to upload documents, and payment requests are no longer accepted.
- Canada Greener Homes Loan. Funding is fully committed and new loan applications cannot be approved.
- Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus. Stopped taking new applicants in February 2024. The last application deadline for existing files was 31 December 2025.
- Home Efficiency Rebate. Ended intake on 27 January 2025.
- Oil to Heat Pump Affordability. The last day to apply was 31 July 2026.

The City of Ottawa Loan
Separate from the rebates, the City of Ottawa runs the Better Homes Ottawa Loan Program, which lends against your property for energy retrofits and is repaid on your property tax bill. It starts at $10,000 and runs over a twenty year term, with a zero interest option for income qualified households. It is a loan, not a grant, so it is a different decision. Program terms move. The figures above were checked on 29 August 2026 against the program’s own pages, and they are current as of that date, but confirm them yourself before you commit money to a purchase. Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant still available?
No. Natural Resources Canada closed the Greener Homes Grant to new applicants in February 2024, and 31 December 2025 was the last day existing applicants could upload documents. The Greener Homes Loan is also closed because its funding is fully committed. Neither program is worth planning a purchase around now.
What replaced the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus?
Home Renovation Savings, delivered by Enbridge Gas with Save on Energy. HER+ stopped taking new applicants in February 2024 and its last deadline for existing files passed on 31 December 2025. Home Renovation Savings is the program an Ottawa homeowner applies to today.
Do I need an energy audit to get a heat pump rebate now?
Home Renovation Savings runs a no-assessment path for heat pumps, so a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation is usually not required. Some other line items, including the heat pump water heater and the windows rebate, do sit on the stream that needs an assessment first.
Can I get the rebate if I already bought the equipment?
No. Pre-approval has to be in place before the work begins. Equipment bought or installed ahead of approval is not eligible, and there is no appeal for that. Register first, wait for approval, then book the install.
How much is the heat pump rebate in Ontario?
Up to $2,000 on a cold climate air source heat pump for a gas-heated Enbridge home, and up to $7,500 for a home heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood. Ground source runs higher on both. Confirm the current figures on the program site before you commit.
