A ductless system pairs an outdoor unit with one or more slim indoor heads mounted on a wall or ceiling. The two are connected by a small line set that only needs a three inch hole through the exterior wall. There are no ducts to run, no soffits to build and no ceilings to open up. Each indoor head has its own thermostat, so a bedroom can sit at a different temperature than the living room without anybody arguing about it. When a Ductless System Is the Right Answer
Ductless is not a replacement for a whole-home ducted system in a house that already has good ductwork. It shines in specific situations, and these are the ones we get called for most in Ottawa:
- Additions and bonus rooms. The existing furnace was never sized to carry the extra space, and extending ductwork into it is expensive and often impossible.
- Older homes with no ducts. Century homes with radiators or baseboard heat get air conditioning and supplemental heat without a duct system being retrofitted through the walls.

Single-Zone or Multi-Zone?
The choice comes down to how many rooms you need to treat and whether you want them controlled separately.
Single-zone: one outdoor unit, one indoor head. It is the simplest install and the lowest cost. Right for one problem room.
Multi-zone: one outdoor unit feeding two or more indoor heads, each with its own control. It costs more up front and takes longer to install, but it treats several rooms from one piece of outdoor equipment and one set of penetrations.
Best for: pick single-zone for one stubborn room. Pick multi-zone when three or more rooms need help, or when you are conditioning a whole floor with no ducts.

Ductless Repair and Maintenance
We service ductless systems as well as install them. Common calls we get:
- The head is running but barely blowing, usually a blocked filter or a fouled blower wheel.
- Water dripping from the indoor unit, normally a plugged condensate line.
- The unit is cooling but not heating, or the reverse.
- Error codes on the display and units that will not start.
- A musty smell when the head first kicks on.
Ductless filters need cleaning far more often than people expect, and the indoor coil needs a proper clean on a schedule. That single item is behind a large share of the performance complaints we see. Book a yearly service and most of the above never happens.

Does a mini-split heat as well as cool?
Almost all current models do. They are heat pumps, so the same unit provides cooling in summer and heat in the shoulder seasons and through most of the winter. In an Ottawa winter you still want a plan for the coldest stretches, whether that is your existing heating system or a cold-climate rated unit.
How long does a ductless installation take?
A single-zone install is often done in a day. Multi-zone systems take longer because each head needs its own line set routed back to the outdoor unit. We give you a realistic schedule with the quote rather than a hopeful one.
Are mini-splits noisy?
The indoor head is quiet, quieter than a typical window air conditioner, and it runs at low speed most of the time rather than cycling hard on and off. The outdoor unit makes some noise, which is why placement matters. We will not put it under a bedroom window if there is a better option.
Can a ductless system heat my whole house?
It can in the right house, usually a smaller or well-insulated one, with heads placed on each floor or in each main zone. In a larger home with existing ductwork, a ducted heat pump or a furnace and air conditioner pairing is normally the better value. We will tell you which way your house points.
Do I need one outdoor unit for every room?
No. A multi-zone outdoor unit can support several indoor heads at once, which keeps the exterior tidy and reduces the number of wall penetrations. There is a limit to how many heads one outdoor unit can carry, and that limit is part of the sizing work we do before quoting.
